The TuningSpork debut of Paris’s Anthony Collins. Follows his past releases on Liebe Detail, Get Physical, Darkroom Dubs, and several other labels respected within the global dance community. A focused, yet diverse EP exploring foreign sounds without resorting to kitsch.

The collision of dance music and world music is provoking strongly divided opinions. Like olives and Keanu Reeves, it’s a love-it-or-hate-it phenomenon. In the last year, we’ve heard everything from opera to accordion folk get looped into a hit. In our technology-enhanced world, it’s all equally accessible. And since dance/DJ culture has such great potential to transcend borders, it makes sense that we are hearing this reflected in the music itself. Case in point: the new single from Anthony Collins, “Bombay Strings”. Then again, maybe this track is nothing more than pure hedonistic dancefloor fodder, and I’m just thinking too hard.
At any rate, opinions are definitely not so divided on Anthony Collins. His productions have caught on with DJs like the hipster-approved Gui Boratto, the mainstream-bordering Steve Lawler, and now, underground kingpin Jay Haze. With “Bombay Strings”, there’s no trace of Bollywood cheese, but instead the track is guided by a sparse, entrancing guitar lead, contrasted by a shuffly beat and punctuations of hissing steam. With “Littlebox”, Collins continues the hypnotic mood, although with more of a deep house vibe. Closing out the EP is “Bombay House”, which borrows the title track’s shuffle, but aside from that is drastically different, highlighted by a forceful, oddly syncopated synth arpeggiation. Following an impressive string of releases, Anthony Collins proves his consistency but definitely not his predictability.
